“REND YOUR HEART, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.” (Joel 2:13)
O GOD, you have willed that suffering and death, which originate in sin, remain part of our lot, enabling us to attain mystical union with Christ who also suffered and died.
So also the concupiscence of the world, the lust of the flesh and the eyes, the strife of life, together with bodily weakness, remain part of our lot, that in them we may have the seed and material of virtue.
Examen
I CONFESS to you, Almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to Blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the Apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the Saints that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, deed, and by things left undone: by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault.
(Examen—list your sins)
Wherefore I beseech blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints to pray for me to the Lord our God.
May Almighty God have mercy on me, forgive me all my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen
May the Almighty and Merciful Lord grant me pardon, absolution, and remission of all my sins. Amen
Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins, because of your just punishments, but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of your Grace, to sin no more and to avoid new occasions for sin.
( Or perhaps this:
O my God, I am scandalized that I feel so little remorse for all the things I have done to hurt others, hurt myself, and offend you, who are all good and deserving of all my love.
Please give me the Grace of contrition that I may at last find true remorse, ask forgiveness, sin no more, and avoid new occasions of sin. Amen)
