Training the Moral Will—Habits for Living

Here is a(n incomplete) list of “mortifications” (the subjugation of human passions, appetites, and impulses through fasting, abstinence, and the daily practice of self-control). Remember that self control is a form of worship.

  • Refrain from talking too much

  • Discipline yourself to move and sit quietly

  • Do not thrust your opinions on others

  • Do not assign motives to the acts of others

  • Learn to listen and to hear

  • Avoid bragging and name dropping

  • Do not discuss personalities

  • Forbid yourself to gossip

  • Always show respect for others’ time

  • Refrain from meddling in the affairs of others

  • Practice silence and quiet reflection

  • Never complain

  • Affirm the dignity of every person
